Craig “Doc” Plain was first exposed to magic when he was nine. His mother, tired of him whining about being bored over summer break, signed him up for every available activity at the local library. One of them happen to be a magic class, where he learned some tricks he still performs to this day. But his interest became an obsession when his cousin, Kevin, gave him a copy of The Amateur Magician’s Handbook (so Kevin is really to blame for all this).
Further fueled by having a magic shop in his town growing up, Doc spent all of his allowance on tricks and props. While performing for friends and family, he felt the need to do more. So at age 16, Doc landed his first paying gig, a birthday party for a 7 year old. It went so horribly wrong, he still has nightmares about it. It wasn’t until years later as a college student he was asked by friends to perform at Milwaukee’s first Bastille Days Festival. Having no clue, Doc put together an act and did street magic for the first two years of the festival and fell in love with it.
But, as with so many others, life took over and magic was put on the back burner. But when Craig finished his doctorate (hence the nickname “Doc”) he found himself with time on his hands. His wife, tired of him whining about being bored, told him to get a hobby. So he dusted off the old magic kit and began performing at festivals, farmers’ markets, and even birthday parties.
Doc wants to bring magic to the masses. So many people see magic on TV and the movies. But he’s amazed while out performing how few people get the chance to see it live, to experience the magic happen in their hands. Doc hopes to change that.
